Glossary

We’re putting together a collection of transportation terms that refer to the new ways that people are getting around. If you come across one, feel free to send it to us at curbingcars@gmail.com. Where possible, we’ll cite the first place we heard it.

Driving Light: Using your own car when needed, and relying on an assortment of transportation methods — walking, bicycling, ride sharing, public transportation, and car sharing. Originates with the Livable Streets Coalition of Cambridge, Mass. Read more about driving light here.

Road Diet: Reducing or rethinking road lanes to incorporate bicycle lanes, provide pedestrian protection, and improve traffic flow. One aspect of the road diet is the lane diet, in which lanes are narrowed in order to reduce speeds. Read more about road diets here.
